The team drilled down 2,800 meters to reach bedrock, recovering ice that contains pristine samples of ancient air and detailed temperature records spanning more than 1.2 million years. This unprecedented achievement comes after four field seasons of drilling in extreme conditions, with average summer temperatures of -35°C. The extracted ice core offers a unique window into Earth’s climate history, preserving atmospheric compositions and temperature data that will help scientists understand major climate transitions of the past.
2️⃣ Why is this good news: The recovered ice core gives scientists access to a previously unavailable record of Earth’s climate history. This extended timeline allows researchers to study the Mid-Pleistocene Transition, a crucial period when glacial cycles shifted from 41,000-year to 100,000-year intervals. The data will improve understanding of how Earth’s climate system responds to changes over long periods. With samples of ancient atmospheric gases preserved in the ice, scientists can better comprehend the relationship between greenhouse gases and temperature changes throughout Earth’s history.
3️⃣ What’s next: The precious ice cores will be transported to Europe aboard the icebreaker Laura Bassi, maintaining a strict -50°C cold chain during transit. Once in Europe, scientists will begin detailed analysis of the ice samples to uncover Earth’s climate and atmospheric history. The team will also study the most basal sections of the core to determine if even older pre-Quaternary ice exists and investigate when this region of Antarctica was last ice-free.
