Over 6,000 delegates from governments, nonprofits, institutions and the private sector gathered under the theme “Our Ocean, Our Heritage, Our Future.” Kenya itself announced more than 40 commitments backed by over $1 billion, covering marine protected areas, fisheries monitoring, climate finance and the blue economy. Countries across Africa, South America and Europe pledged to expand and strengthen marine protected areas, with less than five years left to meet the global goal of protecting 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030. Delegates also launched a public tracker and published audits of past commitments, reinforcing accountability across the conference’s 12-year history.

Fifteen countries endorsed a declaration to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, which directly threatens the livelihoods of millions of coastal communities. The 85% fulfillment rate of past conference commitments shows that these voluntary pledges are not just symbolic, they drive real, measurable change on the ground and in the water. Holding the conference in Africa for the first time elevated the voices of African nations, youth and small-scale fishers, broadening participation in global ocean governance.

Nations including Senegal, Indonesia, Tanzania and Brazil need to follow through on specific marine protected area expansions in the coming years.
