There is so much misinformation surrounding panic attacks so it’s essential that we dispel the myths to better support sufferers, as well as improve our understanding of mental health as a whole.
2️⃣ Why is this important: Around 4.7% of the US population suffer from panic disorder at some point in their lives. Panic attacks are characterized by an overwhelming feeling of fear that comes without warning and any obvious cause. Frequent attacks can affect quality of life, preventing sufferers from carrying out everyday activities. Yet, many people still don’t understand the severity of panic attacks, likening them to simply feeling stressed out. The more we can raise awareness of this issue, the more we can decrease the stigma and shame that surrounds panic attacks and panic disorder, as well as other mental health issues like anxiety and depression.
3️⃣ How can you get involved: If you struggle with mental health issues and panic episodes, one of the best ways to get involved in Panic Awareness Day is to join a social media group for depression and anxiety support, such as the GAD (General Anxiety Disorder), Panic Disorder, and Stress Support Group on Facebook. Alternatively, you can host your own fundraising or awareness event to support people with panic disorder.

A Brief History of Panic Awareness Day
When was this event established: Panic Awareness Day was founded in 2021 by the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) to raise awareness and provide support for people suffering from panic attacks, as well as reduce the stigma and shame that surround the condition.
How has it developed since then: Today, Panic Awareness Day is marked by multiple organizations with events and by publishing free online resources for sufferers, such as My Dynamics and SADAG. As the awareness of panic attacks has risen in recent years, so has the number of support groups and helplines including No Panic, Mind, and Meetup.
3 Interesting Facts About Panic Awareness Day
- Gender preference: Women are more than twice as likely to suffer from an anxiety disorder, such as panic attacks, than men. However, men are 9 times less likely to seek help for their mental health struggles.
- Fight or flight: When a panic attack occurs, it triggers the innate fight or flight response, which floods our bodies with chemicals like adrenaline. This is the same response that would happen if someone was attacked by a grizzly bear. The only difference is that there is usually no imminent danger during a panic attack.
- Unknown cause: It’s unclear what causes people to suffer from panic attacks and/or panic disorder. However, many factors could play a role, including genetics, individual temperament, and stressful events.
