Diego Cardeñosa developed this forensic tool during his PhD research when he noticed that protected shark species continued appearing in markets despite international trade restrictions. The device works similar to a COVID-19 test, analyzing small samples and producing species-specific results within 90 minutes. This breakthrough solves a critical enforcement gap where inspectors previously had to release suspicious shipments because lab testing took too long, allowing illegal traders to continue operating with impunity.
