Hey fellow impactful ninja ?

You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.

  • Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.

  • But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.

Why do we add these product links?

First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.

And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.

What do these affiliate links mean for you?
  1. First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.

  3. And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we won’t receive any commission but we’ll still be happy to have helped you.

What do these affiliate links mean for us?
  1. When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).

  3. And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.

What does this mean for me personally?

You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.

Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.

Stay impactful,

Happy Wednesday 👋

You probably know that renewable energy is one of the, if not the, hottest topics in environmental discussions today.

But did you also know that we must make the switch from fossil fuels to renewable energy… and quickly… if we want to ensure a sustainable planet for future generations…

So, how are we doing in our transition to renewable energy?

Well, a recent report out of Europe says we actually may be on the right track (for once).

Here are the impactful insights that I have for you today:

  • How we are increasing renewable energy generation 🌱
  • How one country is tackling the textile waste problem 👕
  • The important role of virtual power plants ⚡
  • And more… 💚

🌱 How Renewable Energy Capacity Surges in Europe

1️⃣ The big picture: According to a report by energy think tank Ember, wind and solar power generation in the EU increased by 46% from 2019 to 2023, displacing a fifth of the bloc’s fossil fuel generation. Since 2019, the EU’s wind and solar capacity has surged by 65%.

2️⃣ Why is this good news: The European Commission has set a target for renewable energy sources to make up 45% of the overall energy mix by 2030. Without the expansion in renewables, fossil fuel generation would have only fallen by 1.9% (21 terawatt-hours). Instead, it dropped by 22%, as lower electricity demand was offset by a decrease in generation from other clean energy sources. This shift is crucial for meeting climate targets and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

3️⃣ What’s next: The EU’s significant increase in wind and solar capacity over the past four years has not only reduced the share of fossil fuels in the electricity mix but also set a strong foundation for achieving future renewable energy targets. Continued efforts and supportive policies will be essential to maintain this momentum and address the remaining challenges in the transition to a sustainable energy future.

📢 More Good News…

👕 How one country is tackling the textile waste problem:

  • Europe generates an estimated 6.95 million tonnes of textile waste annually. The Czech Republic is taking a pioneering step to address this issue by making textile recycling compulsory from 2025.
  • Currently, the Czechia has around 10,000 textile collection points. The new scheme will expand this network to include accessible locations like town halls and shops.
  • This initiative represents a significant step towards sustainable waste management in Europe. By expanding collection points and enforcing recycling, Czechia hopes to reduce its textile waste and set an example for other EU countries.

🌬️ How direct air capture is becoming more affordable

  • Climeworks, a pioneer in direct air capture (DAC) technology, unveiled its Generation 3 plant today. This new plant is designed to use half the energy of previous models and to cut costs by 50%.
  • If successful, Climeworks’ Generation 3 plant could significantly advance DAC technology as a feasible method for reducing atmospheric carbon pollution. Currently, the technology is too nascent and expensive to make a significant impact on global emissions.
  • Climeworks’ advancements mark a significant step forward in making DAC a viable tool in the fight against climate change.

How virtual power plants can increase climate resiliency:

  • The US state of California is now home to the nation’s largest virtual power plant (VPP). Sunrun, a leading solar and storage company, has developed the virtual power plant called CalReady, which links customers’ solar-plus-storage systems to meet power grid demands, mitigate the risk of rolling blackouts, and lower electricity costs.
  • VPPs consist of numerous small-scale energy resources, such as solar batteries, that collectively function like a traditional power plant. These interconnected systems utilize stored renewable energy from hundreds or thousands of homes to supply power, enhancing the grid’s resilience and reliability.
  • By harnessing the power of distributed renewable energy resources, VPPs offer a promising solution to enhance grid resilience, reduce costs, and support the transition to a more sustainable energy future.
