Hey fellow impactful ninja ?

You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.

  • Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.

  • But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.

Why do we add these product links?

First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.

And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.

What do these affiliate links mean for you?
  1. First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.

  3. And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we won’t receive any commission but we’ll still be happy to have helped you.

What do these affiliate links mean for us?
  1. When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).

  3. And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.

What does this mean for me personally?

You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.

Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.

Stay impactful,

📰 The quick summary: A community initiative in Rio’s largest favela transforms used cooking oil into eco-friendly soaps and cleaning products while creating jobs for local women and preventing environmental pollution.
📈 One key stat: A single liter of oil can pollute up to 25,000 liters of water, highlighting why this recycling initiative makes such a significant environmental impact.
💬 One key quote: “It’s a good idea because we’re preventing oil from going down the drain,” says Rocinha resident and longtime customer Dora Almeida.

1️⃣ The big picture: In Rio de Janeiro’s Rocinha, Brazil’s largest favela with over 72,000 residents, a transformative environmental project has taken root. After discovering cooking oil pollution in a local water reservoir in 2020, community leader Marcelo Santos created Óleo no Ponto, an initiative that collects used cooking oil from households and transforms it into sustainable cleaning products. The project prevents environmental damage while creating economic opportunities for vulnerable women in the community. Through a system that rewards residents with points exchangeable for products, the initiative has successfully diverted thousands of gallons of oil from polluting water systems while producing soap bars and cleaning pastes sold under the Sabão do Morro (Favela Soap) brand.

2️⃣ Why is this good news: This environmental initiative delivers multiple benefits beyond waste reduction. By preventing improper disposal of cooking oil, the project protects local water systems and helps unclog pipes that often cause flooding during heavy storms. The initiative has created sustainable employment for nine Rocinha residents who process the oil into over 5,000 products annually. Local women gain economic independence through three-month workshops where they learn to produce eco-friendly cleaning materials, which they can then make and sell themselves. The project’s success has attracted partnerships with hotels and shopping malls, increasing oil collection by approximately 50% and expanding the positive environmental impact beyond the favela.

3️⃣ What’s next: Project leader Adriana Moura aims to get Sabão do Morro products onto shelves of large supermarkets throughout Rio de Janeiro. The team continues focusing on environmental education through school lectures to instill sustainability values in younger generations. With dreams of establishing more collection centers, expanding training programs, and developing new products, the initiative seeks to amplify its impact across other parts of Rio.
