Hey fellow impactful ninja ?

You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.

  • Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.

  • But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.

Why do we add these product links?

First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.

And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.

What do these affiliate links mean for you?
  1. First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.

  3. And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we won’t receive any commission but we’ll still be happy to have helped you.

What do these affiliate links mean for us?
  1. When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).

  3. And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.

What does this mean for me personally?

You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.

Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.

Stay impactful,

Happy Wednesday 👋

After years of overfishing and relentless demand, sharks and rays finally have a lifeline!

In a landmark win for ocean life, over 70 species of sharks and rays have scored historic protections against international trade.

This moment marks a major step toward safeguarding marine biodiversity and restoring balance to fragile ocean ecosystems!

Here are the impactful insights that I have for you today:

  • Shielding sharks and rays from global trade threats 🦈
  • Brazil invests in its first industrial-scale carbon removal plant 🇧🇷
  • Scientists capture the secret choreography of atoms on camera for the first time ⚛️
  • Discussion of the week: giving back 💬
  • And more… 💚

🦈 Over 70 Shark and Ray Species Win Historic Trade Protections

1️⃣ The big picture: Global governments have agreed to enact landmark international trade restrictions and bans for more than 70 threatened shark and ray species, including oceanic whitetip sharks, whale sharks, manta rays, and devil rays, under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) at the 20th Conference of the Parties (COP20). This historic move is aimed at curbing the unsustainable global trade in shark meat, fins, gill plates, oil, and other products, which has driven sharp declines in many populations. Under the new agreements, species listed in Appendix I face a full ban on international commercial trade, and others under Appendix II will require stricter regulation and proof of sustainability before any trade can occur.

2️⃣ Why is this good news: Sharks and rays have suffered serious population drops due to overfishing and lack of regulation. By either requiring proof that trade is sustainable or banning it altogether, these measures give populations a real chance to rebound rather than just slow their decline. Sharks and rays are key predators that help keep marine food webs balanced. When they disappear, ecosystems become less stable, which can harm fisheries, coral reefs, and coastal communities.

3️⃣ What’s next: Turning these protections into real conservation gains will require governments to invest in monitoring, enforcement capacity, and species identification, while strengthening national laws and cracking down on loopholes that enable illegal trade.

📢 More Good News…

📲 How smartphone photos can help track forest recovery:

  • RegenReach is a citizen science conservation platform that allows park visitors to help scientists track forest recovery after wildfires by taking standardized smartphone photos at designated monitoring stations.
  • The app allows scientists to observe vegetation regrowth, fire severity impacts, erosion, invasive species spread, wildlife movement, and broader ecological changes—far beyond what traditional, resource-intensive field surveys can capture.
  • As climate change increases the frequency and intensity of wildfires, RegenReach offers a scalable, low-cost way to gather long-term ecological data.

🇧🇷 Brazil invests in its first industrial-scale carbon removal plant:

  • Brazil’s Development Bank (BNDES) will invest $71 million in the country’s first commercial-scale industrial BECCS (Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage) project.
  • The initiative, led by FS Indústria de Biocombustíveis at its corn-ethanol plant in Lucas do Rio Verde, will capture and permanently store approximately 423,000 tons of CO₂ annually in deep saline formations.
  • By combining biomass-based ethanol production with carbon capture, the project aims to achieve net carbon removal, positioning Brazil as a leader in low-carbon biofuels and supporting its Paris Agreement commitments.

⚛️ Scientists capture the secret choreography of atoms on camera for the first time:

  • Scientists have captured, for the first time, the coordinated quantum motion of atoms inside a molecule, directly imaging what has been described as a “dance” of atoms that continues even at absolute zero, the coldest possible temperature.
  • Researchers at Goethe University Frankfurt and partner institutions used the powerful European XFEL X-ray laser to take extremely fast snapshots of atoms in a medium-sized molecule, revealing synchronized zero-point vibrations rather than random jitter.
  • These findings give scientists a new way to observe and understand fundamental quantum behavior and open the door to future studies capturing even faster dynamics, such as electron motion, which could deepen our grasp of molecular processes.
