1️⃣ The big picture: For years, scientists warned that coral reefs were on an irreversible path of decline, battered by marine heatwaves and mass bleaching events. A major new study is now challenging that bleak outlook by identifying more than 64,000 square miles of coral reefs with the potential to endure future warming. Spanning 71 countries and 100 territories, these resilient reefs account for roughly a third of all reef systems on Earth. Researchers used data from over 45,000 coral field observations collected between 1960 and 2025, combined with climate, oceanographic, and human-impact data, to produce the most detailed global assessment of reef resilience ever created. More than half of these resilient reefs are concentrated in Australia, the Bahamas, Cuba, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

2️⃣ Why is this good news: Discovering that three times more reefs may survive climate change than previously thought gives conservationists and governments a much larger and more actionable target for protection efforts. A detailed global map of these reefs, built using satellite imagery and artificial intelligence, now gives policymakers concrete, location-specific data to guide where conservation funding and protections are directed. The findings arrived just as Kenya signed the first high-level global commitment to protect climate-resilient coral reefs, with more than a dozen other governments already pledging to use this science to shape future conservation priorities. Healthier reefs support fish populations, coastal communities, tourism economies, and shoreline protection for hundreds of millions of people, so protecting even a larger fraction of surviving reefs carries enormous human and ecological benefits. The research also directly supports the global “30 by 30” biodiversity target, giving nearly 200 signatory countries a science-backed framework for deciding which marine areas to prioritize before 2030.

3️⃣ What’s next: Study authors are calling on governments to incorporate the new reef data into national climate and biodiversity strategies, particularly to help meet the 30 by 30 conservation target by 2030. The Wildlife Conservation Society has already begun working with individual countries to translate the findings into real conservation commitments. Researchers and local organizations are also seeking to ground-truth the study’s predictions with on-the-ground monitoring data to ensure the science drives meaningful, local conservation action.
