Hey fellow impactful ninja ?

You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.

  • Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.

  • But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.

Why do we add these product links?

First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.

And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.

What do these affiliate links mean for you?
  1. First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.

  3. And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we won’t receive any commission but we’ll still be happy to have helped you.

What do these affiliate links mean for us?
  1. When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).

  3. And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.

What does this mean for me personally?

You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.

Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.

Stay impactful,

📰 The quick summary: Small grants are providing vital financial support to early-career conservationists, creating a pipeline for talent and projects that larger funding mechanisms often fail to reach.
📈 One key stat: Only 10 fellowship slots are available for 1,700 applicants in the EDGE of Existence program, highlighting the severe imbalance between conservation talent and available funding opportunities.
💬 One key quote: “Small grants, he writes, are proving unexpectedly resilient. They are quick to deploy, accessible to emerging organizations, and flexible enough to respond to local realities.”

1️⃣ The big picture: Conservation efforts worldwide face a significant bottleneck as talented early-career professionals struggle to secure stable funding for important projects. Paul Barnes, leader of the Zoological Society of London’s EDGE of Existence program, has identified that while there’s no shortage of qualified conservationists or viable projects, the funding architecture isn’t meeting their needs. Small grants have emerged as a surprisingly effective solution, functioning as financial ‘capillaries’ that keep local conservation systems running when larger funding streams falter. These modest investments have proven their worth by establishing protected areas, advancing species recovery, and strengthening locally led conservation initiatives in ways that larger donors often struggle to achieve.

2️⃣ Why is this good news: Small grants are transforming conservation by providing accessible funding pathways for emerging talent that might otherwise be lost to the field. These nimble financial mechanisms reach places and projects that larger, slower-moving funding sources cannot, creating resilience in the conservation ecosystem. Evidence shows these modest investments yield significant returns, helping establish protected areas and advance species recovery efforts led by local experts. Unlike traditional funding models with heavy reporting requirements, small grants can respond quickly to conservation opportunities and crises, maintaining momentum during funding gaps. Most importantly, they empower local leadership and knowledge, ensuring conservation efforts reflect the needs of communities most invested in their success.

3️⃣ What’s next: The small-grants model needs radical expansion, increasing supply at least tenfold according to Barnes. Conservation funders should establish better pooling mechanisms among donors while making multiyear grants the norm. Regional regranting hubs could reduce risk and administrative burdens, while dedicated rapid-response funds could ensure quick action for urgent conservation needs.
