Hey fellow impactful ninja ?

You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.

  • Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.

  • But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.

Why do we add these product links?

First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.

And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.

What do these affiliate links mean for you?
  1. First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.

  3. And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we won’t receive any commission but we’ll still be happy to have helped you.

What do these affiliate links mean for us?
  1. When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).

  3. And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.

What does this mean for me personally?

You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.

Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.

Stay impactful,

📰 The quick summary: Somerset’s eel population is being revived through a blend of science, folklore and community activism, helping restore a critically endangered species that once shaped the region’s cultural identity.
📈 One key stat: European eel populations have dropped by more than 90% since the 1970s, with Somerset’s Bridgwater Bay seeing a devastating 99% decline between 1980 and 2009.
💬 One key quote: “Eels have fascinated me for a long time. I have gone from poacher to gamekeeper: cooking them to realising how important it is to protect these extraordinary, charismatic creatures,” said celebrity chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall.

1️⃣ The big picture: The Somerset Eel Recovery Project (Serp) is leading an innovative conservation effort that combines scientific methods with cultural revival to save the critically endangered European eel. These once-abundant creatures have seen their populations plummet by over 90% since the 1970s due to overfishing, pollution, migration barriers, and climate change. The project installs eel tanks in schools, organizes storytelling events, conducts citizen science efforts, and creates traditional rope passages to help eels navigate barriers. By weaving together ecological restoration with cultural memory, Serp is not only working to save a keystone species but also reconnecting communities with their historical relationship to these remarkable animals.

2️⃣ Why is this good news: This innovative approach to conservation demonstrates how cultural heritage can be leveraged to protect endangered wildlife. By installing 60 eel tanks in local classrooms last year, the project is educating a new generation about these remarkable creatures while building emotional connections to their preservation. Traditional methods like straw rope-making serve dual purposes – creating pathways for young eels to navigate barriers while engaging communities in hands-on conservation. The project has attracted high-profile supporters including Feargal Sharkey and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, bringing national attention to eel preservation. Beyond saving a single species, the effort helps restore entire wetland ecosystems while reviving forgotten cultural traditions, showing how environmental restoration can strengthen community identity.

3️⃣ What’s next: Serp will continue expanding its school programs while developing more citizen science initiatives to track eel populations. Habitat restoration work will focus on creating additional passages around barriers that block eel migration. The group aims to increase public awareness by documenting and sharing traditional eel-related stories and practices before they’re lost to time.
