Hey fellow impactful ninja ?

You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.

  • Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.

  • But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.

Why do we add these product links?

First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.

And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.

What do these affiliate links mean for you?
  1. First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.

  3. And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we won’t receive any commission but we’ll still be happy to have helped you.

What do these affiliate links mean for us?
  1. When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).

  3. And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.

What does this mean for me personally?

You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.

Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.

Stay impactful,

Happy Friday 👋

🌿 Introducing Chonkus: The Breakthrough Algae That Could Transform Carbon Capture

1️⃣ The big picture: An international team, with researchers from the US and Italy, has discovered a new cyanobacteria strain named “Chonkus” that could revolutionize carbon sequestration and biomanufacturing. Found in volcanic vents off Sicily, this algae thrives in CO2-rich waters, offering a natural and efficient solution for capturing carbon and reducing greenhouse gases.

2️⃣ Why is this good news: Chonkus sets itself apart with its dense growth and quick settling properties, which simplify the harvesting process and make it an attractive option for large-scale industrial applications. Its unique ability to grow rapidly in high CO2 conditions and convert this into biomass makes Chonkus an ideal tool not just for tackling climate change but also for advancing sustainable biomanufacturing. The researchers envision using Chonkus to produce clean fuels, pharmaceuticals, and other valuable compounds, effectively turning a pollutant into productivity.

3️⃣ What’s next: The potential applications for Chonkus are vast and varied. The research team is eager to explore how this cyanobacteria can be integrated into existing industrial processes to enhance efficiency and sustainability. Their next steps involve scaling up the production while ensuring the long-term stability and effectiveness of Chonkus in various environmental conditions. If successful, this could lead to significant advancements in how we manage carbon emissions and harness the power of nature to sustain our planet.

📢 Three More Good News

👨‍🌾 How Denmark is converting 15% farmland to nature:

  • Denmark plans to restore around 10% of its land to nature, converting farmland into forests and peatlands. This is part of the country’s strategy to decrease agricultural emissions. These measures include taxing livestock emissions, reducing nitrogen fertilizer use, and encouraging sustainable practices.
  • Agricultural emissions contribute 25% of carbon emissions from around the world. The approach not only mitigates climate change by restoring natural areas, but is also reducing the reliance on carbon-intensive livestock farming. This policy will hopefully reflect positive collaboration between government, industries, and environmental groups alike.
  • Now, Denmark must ensure the plan avoids unintentional consequences and may implement other safeguards to achieve a 70% emissions reduction by 2030.

🌞 The new Georgia plant that could recycle 10 million solar panels a year:

  • A city in Georgia, a US state, is set to launch a groundbreaking solar panel recycling and solar glass manufacturing facility with Solarcycle. The facility will eventually recycle up to 10 million solar panels annually and use alternate materials to produce solar glass.
  • This is a major step in creating a circular solar supply chain in the US and addresses the growing problem of solar panel waste. Additionally, America’s reliance on imports will be reduced and the project will help create 1,250 jobs, further supporting the clean energy industry.
  • Recycling operations will begin in mid-2025, while the solar glass factory will open in 2026. Solarcycle will also collaborate with other manufacturers like Runergy to build a steady supply of recycled solar glass, paving the way for better solar manufacturing and a sustainable future.

🔋 How Japan’s flow battery tech could replace coal and gas:

  • Japan’s Hokkaido region is pioneering the use of flow batteries to store renewable energy from wind and solar. These advanced batteries, which use liquid vanadium, are an efficient solution for stabilizing renewable grids and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
  • Flow batteries allow for long-term energy storage and can help enable Japan’s shift away from coal and gas plants, which make up a large portion of global emissions. Hokkaido’s initiative shows how advanced storage solutions can support decarbonization and help nations achieve net-zero targets.
  • To scale up this project, Hokkaido must overcome high costs and the vanadium supply chain challenges. Right now, the project already sets a precedent for regions worldwide to implement renewable energy more effectively and build a better, sustainably-powered future.
