Hey fellow impactful ninja ?

You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.

  • Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.

  • But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.

Why do we add these product links?

First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.

And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.

What do these affiliate links mean for you?
  1. First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.

  3. And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we won’t receive any commission but we’ll still be happy to have helped you.

What do these affiliate links mean for us?
  1. When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).

  3. And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.

What does this mean for me personally?

You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.

Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.

Stay impactful,

📰 The quick summary: A Mississippi teen’s oyster bed restoration project has successfully grown over 1,500 oysters for coastal ecosystem recovery, earning her a prestigious National Geographic Society award that recognizes her contribution to environmental conservation.
📈 One key stat: A single oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water daily, highlighting why the 1,500 oysters produced by this restoration project represent significant ecological value for the Gulf Coast.
💬 One key quote: “The environment doesn’t have a voice and cannot speak for itself. We need people to advocate for it by creating laws and policies to protect nature,” says Demi Johnson about her future plans in environmental law.

1️⃣ The big picture: A 14th-year-old Girl Scout from Mississippi has successfully produced over 1,500 oysters as part of a critical restoration effort along the Gulf Coast. Demi Johnson’s environmental project earned her recognition from the National Geographic Society, placing her among only two US projects to receive a 2024 Significant Achievement Award. Her work addresses the severe decline of oyster populations that have suffered from multiple disasters including Hurricane Katrina, which destroyed 90% of Mississippi’s oyster reefs in 2005, and the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill. These marine creatures serve as vital ecosystem engineers – filtering water, creating habitat for hundreds of species, and protecting coastlines from erosion.

2️⃣ Why is this good news: The restoration work has shown impressive growth, increasing from 480 oysters in Johnson’s first season to 1,100 in her second year. These results contribute to the most successful season in the program’s eight-year history, with volunteers collecting over 93,000 oysters across 48 coastal sites. The project reconnects the region with its historical identity as a seafood capital while restoring crucial environmental services – each oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water daily and their reefs provide homes for more than 300 marine species. This youth-led conservation effort demonstrates how dedicated individuals can make meaningful progress in reversing environmental damage, while inspiring other young people to participate in ecosystem restoration.

3️⃣ What’s next: Johnson plans to expand her work by managing nine oyster gardens in the upcoming season. She’ll pursue additional training through specialized oyster gardening courses this summer to enhance her skills. Looking toward the future, she aims to build a career in environmental law to create and enforce policies protecting nature.
