The first phase, set to launch in 2026, will deliver 300 MW of power across a million square feet of computing space. Unlike traditional data centers that draw from the public grid, Data City will create its own energy on-site, starting with natural gas before transitioning completely to green hydrogen. This approach represents a fusion of two major 21st century trends: artificial intelligence advancement and large-scale sustainable energy production.
2️⃣ Why is this good news: This project creates a dedicated clean energy source for AI computation without straining existing power grids used by the public. The behind-the-meter approach ensures reliability and stability for critical digital infrastructure while planning for a complete transition to green hydrogen. Texas is transforming from a fossil fuel hub into a clean energy powerhouse with multiple complementary projects including green hydrogen production, micro-nuclear reactors, and massive solar installations. The concentration of computing power with its own sustainable energy supply creates perfect conditions for developing advanced AI, potentially including artificial general intelligence, while demonstrating how energy-intensive technologies can grow without increasing carbon emissions.
3️⃣ What’s next: The first phase of Data City will launch in 2026 with 300 MW of power capacity and one million square feet of space. By 2028, the project plans to begin integrating green hydrogen from the neighboring Hydrogen City development, stored in underground salt caverns. The full vision targets 5 GW total power capacity and over 15 million square feet of built infrastructure in the long term.
