1️⃣ The big picture: Construction is one of the most carbon-intensive industries on the planet, and finding ways to decarbonize it at scale has long been a major challenge. A Dutch startup has now launched a concrete additive called Rebond 300, verified to carry a carbon footprint of -149 kg CO2 per tonne, making it the first construction material of its kind to remove more carbon than it produces. The product works by converting captured CO2 into a stable mineral powder using a process called geomimicry, a form of accelerated mineralization. Builders can use it as a supplementary cementitious material to replace conventional cement types, and every structure built with it effectively becomes a permanent carbon storage site. The carbon footprint figure has been independently verified through an Environmental Product Declaration.

2️⃣ Why is this good news: For the first time, you can build with a material that actively pulls carbon out of the atmosphere rather than adding to it, turning infrastructure projects into long-term carbon sinks. Construction accounts for a massive share of global emissions, and a product that slots into existing concrete workflows while delivering negative carbon performance has the potential to shift the industry at scale. Because the CO2 gets locked into the mineral structure of the material itself, the storage is permanent rather than reliant on ongoing management or accounting offsets. Organizations looking to meet science-based climate targets can also purchase verified carbon dioxide removal credits generated through the use of this material. As projects grow bigger, their carbon storage impact grows with them, flipping the traditional logic of large-scale construction entirely.

3️⃣ What’s next: Paebbl is currently in discussions with partners across several sectors, including data centers, public infrastructure, coastal protection, and residential and retail buildings. The company has already successfully integrated earlier versions of its product into a range of cement and concrete constructions. Scaling these partnerships will be key to proving the material’s impact beyond pilot projects and into mainstream construction supply chains.
