💚 The “Fish Mouth” Filter 🐟
Affiliate Disclosure
Hey fellow impactful ninja ?
You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.
Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.
But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.
Why do we add these product links?
First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.
And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.
What do these affiliate links mean for you?
First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.
When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.
And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we won’t receive any commission but we’ll still be happy to have helped you.
What do these affiliate links mean for us?
When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.
When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).
And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.
What does this mean for me personally?
You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.
Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.
Stay impactful,
Happy Wednesday 👋
What if the secret to cleaning up laundry pollution has been swimming in the ocean all along?
Scientists in Germany have just developed a “Fish Mouth” filter that can remove microplastics from washing machines…
Inspired by the tiny, comb-like mouths of fish that filter plankton from water, this innovation can help protect rivers, soil, and wildlife from one of the most overlooked forms of plastic pollution!

Here are the impactful insights that I have for you today:
- How fish can help scientists catch tiny plastic fibers 🐟
- How scientists plan to pull space junk out of orbit 🪐
- The record-breaking litter spotted in China’s tiger reserve 🐅
- Discussion of the week: intentions for the year 💬
- And more… 💚

🐟 Scientists Develop A Fish-Inspired Filter That Captures 99% of Laundry Microplastics
1️⃣ The big picture: Researchers in Germany have developed a novel laundry filter inspired by fish mouths that can remove 99% of microplastics from washing machine wastewater. The design mimics filter-feeding fish such as anchovies, sardines, and mackerel, which have evolved comb-like gill structures that capture microscopic prey while allowing water to flow freely. Similarly, the filter uses a cone-shaped, mesh-lined system that directs water along angled surfaces, causing plastic particles to roll and accumulate in a separate compartment.
2️⃣ Why is this good news: This innovation directly addresses the environmental problem of microplastics, persistent pollutants that harm aquatic life, contaminate food chains, and accumulate in the environment. This new filter captures 99% of microplastics from laundry, preventing millions of tiny plastic fibers from entering rivers, lakes, and soil. By mimicking fish mouths, the filter is also efficient, low-tech, and smartly designed, showing how biology can inspire sustainable engineering.
3️⃣ What’s next: The researchers have already filed a patent in Germany, and they will likely continue to refine the design and test it in real washing machines under everyday conditions. Beyond laundry, the technology could become a key tool in mitigating microplastic pollution, which has released at least 5.6 million metric tons of synthetic fibers into the environment since the 1950s.

📢 More Good News…
🌱 How a spray can protect crops from drought and disease:
- Researchers at UC San Diego have developed a water-based, spray-on polymer that forms a gas-permeable polynorbornene coating on plant leaves, killing both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria while allowing plants to breathe and better withstand short periods of drought.
- Unlike many agricultural treatments, the polymer is made and applied in water, avoiding toxic organic solvents that can harm plants and the environment. When sprayed on just a small area of a leaf, the coating triggers whole-plant immune defenses, protecting even untreated areas.
- The research has so far been tested on model plants under controlled conditions. Future work will focus on improving biodegradability, confirming environmental safety, and testing the spray on real crops in field settings.
🪐 How scientists plan to pull space junk out of orbit:
- Scientists at the University of Colorado Boulder are developing an electrostatic “tractor beam” designed to move space debris safely without physical contact, reducing the risk of collisions in Earth’s increasingly crowded orbits.
- The team uses controlled electric charges to create attractive or repulsive forces between a servicing spacecraft and a defunct satellite, allowing the servicer to “tug” debris from a distance. This touch-free approach avoids the dangers of docking, grappling, or harpooning fast-moving, unstable objects.
- If refined and proven in space, electrostatic tractor beams could help prevent cascading debris collisions, protect vital satellites, and add a safer, more controllable option to planetary defense strategies.
🐅 The record-breaking litter spotted in China’s tiger reserve:
- Camera traps in Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park have captured the first-ever footage in China of an Amur (Siberian) tigress with five cubs. Because tigers usually give birth to one to four cubs, a litter of five is extremely rare and marks a significant conservation milestone.
- The sighting highlights the success of China’s tiger conservation efforts, including habitat protection, anti-poaching enforcement, hunting and logging bans, improved monitoring, and cooperation with conservation NGOs.
- Conservationists stress that while the new footage is powerful evidence that protection efforts are working, the tigers’ long-term survival will require the expanding of suitable habitat, restoring of prey species, strengthening of ecological corridors, and further reducing poaching.
