Hey fellow impactful ninja ?

You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.

  • Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.

  • But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.

Why do we add these product links?

First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.

And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.

What do these affiliate links mean for you?
  1. First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.

  3. And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we won’t receive any commission but we’ll still be happy to have helped you.

What do these affiliate links mean for us?
  1. When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).

  3. And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.

What does this mean for me personally?

You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.

Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.

Stay impactful,

Happy Friday 👋

Did you know scientists may have already lost species to extinction before we even knew they existed?

A sweeping global research mission is racing to change that, logging ocean discoveries at a pace that would have seemed impossible just a few years ago. Some of the creatures turning up are so strange they barely look like anything in our current field guides…

The ocean might be far more alive than we ever imagined, and we are finally building the tools to prove it!

Here are the impactful insights that I have for you today:

  • How the ocean census found 1,000+ new marine species in one year 🌊
  • How bacteria-grown material could finally replace plastic ♻
  • What ancient rock art shows about humans and biodiversity 🎨
  • Discussion of the week: impactful everyday actions 💭
  • And more… 💚

🌊 Ocean Census Finds 1,000+ New Marine Species in One Year

1️⃣ The big picture: Over just three years, a global research initiative called the Ocean Census has identified more than 2,000 potentially new marine species, with 1,121 of those found in the most recent year alone. Launched in April 2023 as a joint mission between Japan’s Nippon Foundation and UK-based Nekton, the project aims to discover and describe ocean life at an unprecedented pace before species are lost forever. Among the latest finds are a ghost shark off Australia, a carnivorous sponge in the deep South Atlantic, and a worm living inside a glass sponge structure near Tokyo. Scientists use a digital platform called NOVA to log discoveries quickly, helping cut down a formal description process that can otherwise take more than 13 years. Despite the impressive progress, researchers warn that biodiversity could still be lost before policies exist to protect newly found species.

2️⃣ Why is this good news: Accelerating the marine discovery rate by 54% in a single year shows that coordinated global science can genuinely speed up our understanding of ocean biodiversity. Tools like the NOVA platform mean that newly found species no longer have to wait decades in museum storage before being formally described and made visible to the scientific community. Each newly identified species adds to a growing foundation of knowledge that lawmakers and conservationists can use to design stronger and more targeted ocean protections. Discoveries like the carnivorous death ball sponge and the ghost shark remind us that even well-explored ocean regions still hold surprises, suggesting the true scale of marine life is far greater than current estimates capture. Broadening that knowledge base gives future generations a much better chance of protecting ecosystems before they are degraded.

3️⃣ What’s next: Scientists will continue adding newly found species to the NOVA platform while working to fast-track formal descriptions and scientific naming. The Ocean Census team hopes its accelerated workflow will push more species into the pipeline for policy protection sooner. Expanding expedition coverage to understudied regions remains a priority as the initiative pushes toward its goal of 100,000 discoveries in ten years.

📢 Three More Good News

Bacteria-Grown Material Could Finally Replace Plastic:

  • 📰 The quick summary: Researchers have developed a scalable method to turn bacterial cellulose into a strong, flexible, and biodegradable material that could replace plastics across industries from packaging to electronics.
  • 📈 One key stat: The hybrid bacterial cellulose material reached a tensile strength of about 553 megapascals, making it as strong as some metals and glasses while remaining flexible and biodegradable.
  • 💬 One key quote: “We envision these strong, multifunctional and eco-friendly bacterial cellulose sheets becoming ubiquitous, replacing plastics in various industries and helping mitigate environmental damage,” said Muhammad Maksud Rahman, lead researcher and assistant professor at the University of Houston.

🐋 AI System Launches to Protect Whales from Ship Strikes:

  • 📰 The quick summary: San Francisco Bay launched WhaleSpotter, an AI-powered detection network that tracks gray whales around the clock and alerts mariners in near-real time, offering a new tool to reduce deadly ship strikes as whale deaths in the area hit a 25-year high.
  • 📈 One key stat: Last year, 21 dead gray whales were found in the wider Bay Area, the highest number in 25 years, with at least 40% killed by ship strikes, highlighting the urgent need for better protection measures.
  • 💬 One key quote: “They’ll be able to make adjustments way before they get anywhere close,” said Thomas Hall, director of operations for the San Francisco Bay ferry.

🎨 Ancient Rock Art Shows Humans Always Revered Biodiversity:

  • 📰 The quick summary: Ancient rock art from across the world repeatedly depicts animals and ecological relationships, suggesting that reverence for biodiversity is one of humanity’s oldest moral intuitions and a powerful reminder of what is at stake in today’s biodiversity crisis.
  • 📈 One key stat: Rock art sites spanning continents from the Amazon to Southeast Asia and Southern Africa show a consistent pattern of animal and ecological imagery, underscoring that respect for the natural world was a near-universal feature of early human civilization.
  • 💬 One key quote: “If so many human societies across history understood the natural world as worthy of depiction, reverence and symbolic centrality, what does it say about our own era that we are presiding over its rapid destruction?” writes bioethicist Kerry Bowman.
