Hey fellow impactful ninja ?

You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.

  • Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.

  • But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.

Why do we add these product links?

First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.

And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.

What do these affiliate links mean for you?
  1. First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.

  3. And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we won’t receive any commission but we’ll still be happy to have helped you.

What do these affiliate links mean for us?
  1. When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).

  3. And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.

What does this mean for me personally?

You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.

Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.

Stay impactful,

Happy Friday 👋

Did you know your next gadget might be made from a self-healing, recyclable circuit board?

A team of researchers just developed a material that lets circuit boards be fixed and fully recycled, tackling the growing e-waste crisis..

As e-waste hits record levels worldwide, this tech could transform how we manage discarded devices and recover valuable materials, all while cutting down toxic waste!

Here are the impactful insights that I have for you today:

  • The self-healing circuit boards that could transform electronic waste management ♻️
  • The plants that could help detect and destroy forever chemicals 🌿
  • Empowering coastal communities to create thriving marine protected areas 🌊
  • Peru trains thousands of fishers to rescue sea turtles 🐢
  • And more… 💚

♻️ New Self-Healing Circuit Boards Can Be Fully Recycled, Tackling E-Waste Crisis

1️⃣ The big picture: Scientists at Virginia Tech have created a revolutionary material that could transform electronic waste management. Their vitrimer-liquid metal composite combines the durability of traditional circuit boards with the ability to be reshaped, repaired, and fully recycled. Unlike conventional circuit boards made from permanently hardened thermosets, this new material features special chemical bonds that break and reform when heated. This innovation comes at a critical time, as global e-waste has nearly doubled in the past 12 years to a staggering 62 billion kilograms, with projections showing it will reach 82 billion kilograms by 2030.

2️⃣ Why is this good news: This breakthrough tackles one of our most pressing environmental challenges by enabling a closed-loop system for electronics recycling. The material works at low temperatures, making manufacturing more energy-efficient while maintaining the performance standards needed for modern devices. Key components like LEDs and metals can be cleanly recovered through chemical breakdown rather than destructive melting or grinding. The composite achieves full conductivity with just 5 percent liquid metal, creating natural conductive pathways without soldering or gluing parts together. These properties allow for electronics that can be fixed rather than discarded, potentially saving billions in valuable materials and significantly reducing toxic waste in landfills.

3️⃣ What’s next: Researchers now need to test this composite material in real-world electronic devices to verify its long-term performance. Manufacturing processes must be scaled up from laboratory to industrial production. Companies will need to incorporate this technology into their product designs and develop specialized recycling systems to fully realize its environmental benefits.

📢 Three More Good News

🌿 Plants Could Help Detect and Destroy Dangerous Forever Chemicals in Soil:

  •  📰 The quick summary: Scientists have discovered that plants like hemp can detect and potentially help eliminate dangerous PFAS chemicals from soil and water, providing farmers and landowners with accessible testing methods and potential remediation solutions.
  • 📈 One key stat: Testing for PFAS currently costs around $400 per sample with a one to two-week turnaround time, highlighting the need for more affordable and accessible detection methods.
  • 💬 One key quote: “I think a lot of people now are aware of PFAS, or concerned about it, or want to know whether it’s present in their water, their food. The whole purpose of what we’re trying to do is develop something that’s simple and cost-effective to answer that question for them,” says Bryan Berger, professor of chemical engineering at the University of Virginia.

🔋 Friction-Based Battery Recycling Extracts Metals Without Toxic Waste:

  • 📰 The quick summary: A groundbreaking friction-based recycling method called tribocatalysis now extracts valuable metals from spent lithium-ion batteries without toxic chemicals or high temperatures, offering a sustainable solution for the growing battery waste problem.
  • 📈 One key stat: Tribocatalysis operates without the extreme heat required by traditional methods, significantly reducing the environmental impact of battery recycling while efficiently recovering valuable materials.
  • 💬 One key quote: “By efficiently recovering valuable materials from old batteries and reducing associated waste and pollution, tribocatalysis could pave the way for more sustainable battery industry practices.”

🐢 Peru Trains Thousands of Fishers to Rescue Sea Turtles Caught in Fishing Hooks:

  • 📰 The quick summary: Peru has trained over 4,400 fishers in best practices for releasing sea turtles caught as bycatch, improving animal survival rates and fisher safety.
  • 📈 One key stat: 4,472 Peruvian fishers have been trained in bycatch release techniques, representing about one trained crew member per mahi-mahi fishing boat in the region.
  • 💬 One key quote: “If it weren’t for the turtles, there would be no balance. Everything is in a chain,” says Gustavo Rosales, a fisher from the city of Ilo.
