Hey fellow impactful ninja ?

You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.

  • Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.

  • But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.

Why do we add these product links?

First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.

And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.

What do these affiliate links mean for you?
  1. First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.

  3. And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we won’t receive any commission but we’ll still be happy to have helped you.

What do these affiliate links mean for us?
  1. When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).

  3. And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.

What does this mean for me personally?

You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.

Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.

Stay impactful,

📰 The quick summary: Two marsupial species believed to have been extinct for 6,000 years have been found alive in the rainforests of Indonesian Papua, offering hope that other long-lost species may still survive in the region’s remote wilderness.
📈 One key stat: Both species had been absent from scientific records for approximately 6,000 years, making their rediscovery one of the most significant wildlife finds in recent memory.
💬 One key quote: “It’s fantastic to see new species still being discovered and it shows the importance of some of these rainforests in very remote parts of the world where there hasn’t been much study in the past,” said ecologist David Lindenmayer.

1️⃣ The big picture: Two marsupial species, the pygmy long-fingered possum and the ring-tailed glider, were long believed to have vanished from Earth around 6,000 years ago, known only through fossil records. Researchers and Indigenous community members recently rediscovered both animals alive in the rainforests of the Bird’s Head Peninsula in Indonesian Papua. Scientists photographed the palm-sized long-fingered possum in 2023, while the ring-tailed glider, a squirrel-sized tree dweller with large eyes and a gliding membrane, was also formally described for the first time. Indigenous residents of the region had known about both animals for generations, and their knowledge proved essential to the scientific identification process. The findings were published in two scientific papers co-authored by researchers and local Indigenous community members.

2️⃣ Why is this good news: Rediscovering two species presumed gone for millennia shows that remote, biodiverse rainforests can still hold extraordinary surprises and that wildlife thought lost forever can persist against the odds. Scientists now believe other so-called Lazarus species may still be living undiscovered in the same rainforests, opening the door to further rediscoveries. The collaboration between scientists and Indigenous communities proved vital, highlighting how traditional ecological knowledge can directly support conservation science and lead to findings that formal research alone might miss. These discoveries also strengthen the case for protecting the remote and understudied rainforests of New Guinea, which clearly harbor far more biodiversity than previously recognized.

3️⃣ What’s next: Researchers plan to continue surveying the Bird’s Head Peninsula for additional Lazarus species, with the small forest wallaby named as a strong candidate for rediscovery. Ongoing collaboration with Indigenous Traditional Owners will remain central to future work in the region. Scientists emphasize that the area’s biodiversity is still far from fully understood, suggesting more discoveries are likely ahead.
