Hey fellow impactful ninja ?

You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.

  • Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.

  • But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.

Why do we add these product links?

First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.

And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.

What do these affiliate links mean for you?
  1. First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.

  3. And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we won’t receive any commission but we’ll still be happy to have helped you.

What do these affiliate links mean for us?
  1. When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).

  3. And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.

What does this mean for me personally?

You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.

Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.

Stay impactful,

📰 The quick summary: A waste-picker cooperative in Pune, India has formalized garbage collection while providing dignified employment to thousands of workers, diverting 227 tons of waste daily from landfills and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
📈 One key stat: Swach diverts 227 tonnes of waste per day from landfills, saving the city approximately £10 million in waste management costs and preventing 100,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.
💬 One key quote: “We did not know how to talk to people, since we had never been included in society. We wouldn’t have dared to talk in front of even two people, but now we can fearlessly articulate our demands and thoughts with conviction in front of an audience of 500,” says Rani Shivsharan, a waste picker and board member of Swach.

1️⃣ The big picture: The Swach cooperative in Pune, India has transformed informal waste collection into a formalized system that employs over 3,850 workers, mostly women from marginalized communities. Created through a pro-poor public-private partnership (PPPP), the cooperative gives waste pickers dignity, fair wages, and benefits while providing essential waste management services to the city. The model turns traditional waste collectors into climate educators who teach residents about waste segregation and management. By diverting significant amounts of waste from landfills, Swach reduces greenhouse gas emissions while creating economic opportunities for people who previously had few options for employment.

2️⃣ Why is this good news: This innovative model has elevated the status of waste collectors from informal scavengers to respected environmental service providers with proper uniforms, ID cards, and benefits. Workers now earn stable incomes of about £140 monthly as shareholders in the cooperative, gaining financial independence and social respect. The environmental impact is substantial, with nearly 83,000 tonnes of waste diverted from landfills annually, preventing 100,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions. Beyond waste management, Swach has empowered marginalized women to develop leadership skills and advocate for themselves, creating lasting social change that extends beyond environmental benefits.

3️⃣ What’s next: After significant advocacy efforts, Pune Municipal Corporation recently renewed Swach’s contract for another five years. Leaders of the cooperative are advocating for this model to be made a permanent part of the city’s waste management system rather than requiring regular contract renewals. They also hope to expand this approach to benefit waste collectors in other regions who currently lack similar protections and opportunities.
