Furthermore, humanitarian aid workers returning from humanitarian missions have increased symptoms of mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

A Brief History of World Humanitarian Day
When was this event established: World Humanitarian Day was founded by the United Nations in 2008 in response to the 2003 bomb attack on the Canal Hotel in Baghdad, killing 22 humanitarian aid workers, including the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq, Sérgio Vieira de Mello. This day aims to promote the well-being and dignity of those affected by disasters, as well as the safety of the aid workers who rush to help them.
How has it developed since then: Since its founding, World Humanitarian Day has become the annual flagship campaign for the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). Each year, the event focuses on a particular theme to bring together partners from across the humanitarian system and celebrate their dedication and achievements.

- Effective support: Thanks to humanitarian aid spending, the world has seen a dramatic improvement in human health. For example, since 1980, mortality rates for children under 5 years old have dropped by half. In addition, diseases such as smallpox have effectively been eradicated.
- Localized aid: Although there are numerous international human aid organizations, most aid workers are actually local people. The big benefit of local aid workers is that they already understand the language and culture of the area.
- Varied roles: Some aid workers are sent into a crisis situation to offer immediate aid. However, others have more long-term roles, supporting communities in the later stages of recovery. Just some of the areas humanitarian workers offer support in include transportation, education, engineering, agriculture, and healthcare.
