Unfortunately, these pristine lands are being destroyed at a relentless rate, as we are losing the equivalent of 10 football fields every minute, mainly for agriculture cultivation. 1️⃣ The big picture: World Rainforest Day celebrates the importance of healthy, standing rainforests for climate, biodiversity, culture, and livelihoods. This event unites communities, companies, and organizations across all sectors to drive immediate rainforest impact and stop deforestation. This Day encourages awareness events, policy pledges, and fundraising campaigns to catalyze long-term change.
2️⃣ Why it is important: Rainforests are endangered around the world, mainly because of mining, logging, and agriculture. For example, almost 20% of the Amazon rainforest has been destroyed in the past 50 years. This is worrisome, as rainforests are a massive carbon sink and one of nature’s best defenses against climate change, holding 90-140 billion tons of CO2 emissions. Furthermore, they are one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems on Earth and home to more than 50% of our planet’s plant and animal species. In addition, 25% of the world population – or 1.6 billion people – directly depend on rainforests for their livelihoods.
3️⃣ How you can get involved: You can get involved in World Rainforest Day by joining tree planting efforts, buying sustainable products, or signing solidarity pledges:
- Plant Trees: As deforestation is the main threat to our rainforests, you can donate to organizations that plant trees in these regions or volunteer your time and join their reforestation efforts.
- Buy Responsibly: Help conserve rainforests by purchasing products like coffee, cocoa, fruits, or vegetable oils that are sustainably grown, certified, and follow the standards of nonprofit groups such as the Forest Stewardship Council, the Rainforest Alliance, and the World Wildlife Fund.
- Advocate: Support the movement by making a personal pledge for rainforests or signing The Rainforest Pledge. You can also share the pledges on social media with the hashtag #WorldRainforestDay to inspire others or join advocacy events in your community.

A Brief History of World Rainforest Day
When was this event established: World Rainforest Day was established in 2017 by the Rainforest Partnership to assemble a global movement that protects and restores rainforests worldwide. In addition, they aimed to empower people to become defenders of rainforests, their habitats, and their ecosystems.
How has it developed since then: Between 2021 and 2023, the founders organized annual World Rainforest Day Summits, bringing together 105 collaborating organizations and attendees from 77 countries, to facilitate knowledge exchange and community building for resilient forest protection. Furthermore, in 2024, they launched the World Rainforest Day pledge program to accelerate rainforest conservation and climate action.
3 Interesting Facts About World Rainforest Day
- Medicinal Miracles: 25% of all modern medicines used today have their origins in the rainforest. In addition, 70% of the plants identified by the US National Cancer Institute as having anti-cancer properties are found only in rainforests. Furthermore, around 1 billion people worldwide use medicinal plants (many found in rainforests) regularly to maintain their health.
- Why “Rain” Forests?: Rainforests are partly self-watering, making “their own rain” by releasing water into the atmosphere through transpiration. This process creates clouds, which travel around the world helping arid areas to prevent drought. In addition, rainforests produce and filter our fresh water, contributing to the global supply of drinkable water.
- Undiscovered Species: No one knows how many species live in rainforests – estimates range from 3 to 50 million. What’s more, only 1% of rainforest plant and animal species have been studied, so there are boundless opportunities for discoveries. For example, a single bush in the Amazon rainforest has more species of ants than the entire British Isles. Also, rainforests can have 480 tree species in a single hectare.
