Thirty countries collaborated on this massive scientific endeavor, with components manufactured across three continents. The completed magnet system, weighing nearly 3,000 tons, will create an invisible electromagnetic cage to confine plasma heated to 150 million degrees Celsius, enabling fusion reactions that could provide limitless clean energy.

The magnet system’s completion brings us significantly closer to practical fusion energy – a carbon-free power source with virtually limitless fuel. Unlike conventional nuclear power, fusion produces no long-lived radioactive waste and poses no risk of meltdown. The knowledge gained through ITER is already being shared with private sector fusion initiatives to accelerate commercial development. Once successful, fusion energy could provide abundant electricity without greenhouse gas emissions, helping address both energy security and climate change.
3️⃣ What’s next: With the magnet system completed, ITER’s Tokamak is now in the assembly phase. The first vacuum vessel sector module was inserted into the Tokamak Pit in April 2025, slightly ahead of schedule. Engineers will continue integrating the Central Solenoid magnet and other components into the reactor. Once fully assembled, ITER will begin its experimental operations to demonstrate the scientific and technological feasibility of fusion power.
