Hey fellow impactful ninja ?

You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.

  • Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.

  • But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.

Why do we add these product links?

First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.

And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.

What do these affiliate links mean for you?
  1. First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.

  3. And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we won’t receive any commission but we’ll still be happy to have helped you.

What do these affiliate links mean for us?
  1. When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).

  3. And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.

What does this mean for me personally?

You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.

Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.

Stay impactful,

Happy Friday 👋

Did you know your backyard fence could be pulling double duty as a small power plant?

A quiet shift is happening in residential energy, and it involves some surprisingly clever physics and a very ordinary piece of suburban infrastructure. Researchers and early adopters across Europe are already seeing results that are turning a few assumptions about solar upside down…

This could be the breakthrough that finally brings clean energy generation to the millions of homeowners who never had a roof that worked for them!

Here are the impactful insights that I have for you today:

  • How backyard fences are becoming power sources 🏡
  • How adding fish to rice fields cuts disease and boosts yields 🐟
  • How a new monkey species was found hidden in Congo rainforest 🐒
  • Discussion of the week: habits that matter 💬
  • And more… 💚

🏡 How Backyard Fences Are Becoming Morning and Evening Power Sources

1️⃣ The big picture: Rooftop solar panels have a well-known weakness: they generate most of their power at midday, when electricity grids often need it least, and heat buildup on hot roofs steadily cuts their efficiency. Solar fences take a different approach by mounting bifacial panels vertically along property lines, so one face captures the morning sun and the other catches the evening sun. Bifacial panels have active solar cells on both sides, pulling in reflected light from grass, gravel, and snow for an additional energy boost. Research from the University of York confirmed that this vertical bifacial setup delivers significant performance gains during morning and evening hours. Companies like Germany’s Next2Sun have already completed nearly 500 projects across six European countries, and residential plug-and-play systems are now available starting from around €250.

2️⃣ Why is this good news: Solar fences open up clean energy generation to homeowners who have always been locked out of rooftop solar because of shade, poor roof orientation, or structural limitations. Producing more power in the morning and evening means this technology aligns with when households and grids actually need electricity, reducing stress on energy infrastructure. Vertical mounting keeps panels cooler than roof installations, avoiding the efficiency losses that heat causes on flat panels, and snow simply slides off rather than blocking output for days. Costs can be recovered in as little as eight years, putting solar fences on par with traditional rooftop installations as a genuine long-term investment. Every fence that generates clean electricity also reduces dependence on fossil fuel power plants during peak demand hours, multiplying the climate benefit beyond a single household.

3️⃣ What’s next: Homeowners interested in solar fences should check local zoning rules and permit requirements before installation, since regulations vary by municipality and country. Assessing the fence orientation is important, as a north-to-south fence line with panels facing east and west captures the most benefit from the morning-and-evening advantage. As more residential installations come online, real-world performance data will sharpen understanding of how factors like shading and local climate affect yields.

📢 Three More Good News

🐟 How Adding Fish to Rice Fields Cuts Disease and Boosts Yields by 25%:

  • 📰 The quick summary: Raising native fish alongside rice crops in Senegal reduces the snail populations that spread schistosomiasis while also boosting rice yields by more than 25%, offering farmers a path to better health and greater food security at the same time.
  • 📈 One key stat: Rice yields increased by more than 25% in fields where fish were introduced, showing that this farming approach can meaningfully strengthen food security for rural communities.
  • 💬 One key quote: “By restoring native fish to rice fields, we may be able to reduce disease transmission while helping farmers produce more food and generate additional income. Those kinds of win-win-win solutions are rare, but they are exactly what sustainable development requires,” said Jason Rohr, a professor of biological sciences at the University of Notre Dame and corresponding author of the study.

🐒 New Monkey Species Found Hidden in Congo Rainforest:

  • 📰 The quick summary: Scientists have officially confirmed a new monkey species, Colobus congoensis, hiding in the Congo rainforest, adding a remarkable piece to our understanding of African primate evolution.
  • 📈 One key stat: Genetic analysis shows Colobus congoensis diverged from its closest relative roughly 4 to 5 million years ago, marking one of the oldest known evolutionary splits within the Colobus lineage.
  • 💬 One key quote: “This discovery is both exciting and deeply personal, highlighting the extraordinary biodiversity of my homeland and how much remains undocumented,” said biologist Junior Amboko of Florida Atlantic University.

🧱 How Sewage Sludge Is Becoming Carbon-Negative Concrete:

  • 📰 The quick summary: A California company has developed a process that turns sewage sludge into carbon-negative biochar concrete ingredients, locking away CO2 for centuries while also removing nearly all PFAS “forever chemicals” in the process.
  • 📈 One key stat: Bioforcetech’s flagship California installation achieves a PFAS removal efficiency of 99.98%, a critical milestone as tightening regulations increasingly restrict the spreading of sewage sludge on farm fields.
  • 💬 One key quote: “Bioforcetech has made its name building technologies that enable circularity. We are excited to take everything we’ve learned processing wastewater solids and apply it to closing a carbon loop into concrete for durable long-term storage,” said Dario Presezzi, CEO of Bioforcetech.
