Hey fellow impactful ninja ?

You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.

  • Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.

  • But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.

Why do we add these product links?

First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.

And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.

What do these affiliate links mean for you?
  1. First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.

  3. And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we won’t receive any commission but we’ll still be happy to have helped you.

What do these affiliate links mean for us?
  1. When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).

  3. And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.

What does this mean for me personally?

You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.

Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.

Stay impactful,

📰 The quick summary: After 500 years of local extinction, the European beaver has officially returned to Portugal, bringing significant ecological benefits that will help restore river ecosystems and combat drought and wildfires.
📈 One key stat: The beaver’s return after a 500-year absence marks one of the most significant steps in the aquatic rewilding of Portuguese rivers, offering vital ecosystem services that no modern equipment can replicate.
💬 One key quote: “We’ve been on the lookout for this breakthrough for a few years now, and now we’re thrilled to confirm its return. The beaver is a natural ally in restoring the health of our rivers and wetlands and has a fundamental role to play in our river ecosystems,” says Pedro Prata, Team Leader at Rewilding Portugal.

1️⃣ The big picture: The European beaver has made a historic return to Portugal after being extinct in the country since the 15th century. This significant ecological event was confirmed by recent camera trap footage showing the animal crossing from Spain, where reintroduction efforts have been successful. Beavers are considered ecosystem engineers second only to humans in their ability to transform landscapes. Through their dam-building activities, these large rodents create diverse wetland habitats that support fish, amphibians, invertebrates, and birds while improving water quality and retention.

2️⃣ Why is this good news: Beavers transform landscapes into thriving aquatic paradises by diverting water flow, creating ponds, and cutting channels for floodwater. Their engineering activities increase water retention in soil, which helps combat the drought conditions that frequently affect Portugal. The wetlands they create act as natural firebreaks, potentially reducing the impact of wildfires that regularly threaten the country. Rewilding Portugal notes that the ecological services beavers provide cannot be replicated by modern equipment with the same efficiency and scale, offering these benefits without costs or bureaucratic hurdles.

3️⃣ What’s next: Rewilding Portugal has anticipated the beaver’s arrival and informed relevant ecological authorities to prepare for both the positive and potentially disruptive effects of beaver activity. Conservation efforts will need to balance the ecological benefits with occasional challenges like dam-bursting floods or damage to riverside plantations. Various management approaches used successfully in countries like France, Germany, Sweden, and Switzerland will likely serve as models for Portugal.
