Led by climate scientist Tero Mustonen and the Snowchange Cooperative, they created interconnected pools that submerged acidic soil and stopped harmful emissions. This innovative approach not only restored the damaged landscape but turned it from a carbon source into a carbon sink while providing habitat for 190 bird species, including endangered ones. The project demonstrates how local knowledge combined with scientific methods can achieve remarkable environmental recovery.

The former mining site now attracts up to 100,000 migrating geese each autumn and provides habitat for endangered species like Northern Pintails and Greater Spotted Eagles. Beyond wildlife benefits, the restored wetland prevents acidic runoff from reaching local rivers, helping fish populations recover in previously lifeless waterways. The project strengthens community connections to traditional land use while creating valuable ecosystem services through carbon storage. This successful model has expanded to manage 550 square kilometers of damaged peatlands across Finland and inspired similar community-led conservation efforts worldwide.
