- Support people living with Alzheimer’s disease: Volunteer to visit and help people living with the disease or donate to charities fighting various forms of dementia.

When was this event established: In 1983, President Reagan designated November as Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month to foster awareness and catalyze action against the disease that has become the most prevalent cause of dementia among older adults.
How has it developed since then: Since its inception, Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month has evolved into a significant movement, with many organizations, healthcare professionals, and advocates coming together to spread information, dispel misconceptions, and support those affected by the disease. Over the years, it has gained momentum through social media, public events, and media coverage. In 2023, President Biden made a proclamation on this awareness month, focusing attention on the impact of the disease, especially for individuals with Down syndrome and some minority groups (African Americans and Latinos).

- A women’s disease: Two-thirds of Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease are women. Additionally, there tend to be more female caregivers than male caregivers.

- Lack of sleep and Alzheimer’s risk: People who slept six hours or less per night in their 50s and 60s were more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia later in life.
