1️⃣ The big picture: International Day of Peace was founded by the United Nations, and is celebrated every year on September 21. It calls for people to lay down their weapons and observe ceasefires, but also prompts us to see the humanity of all people around the globe.
2️⃣ Why it is important: A world free from conflict is a dream that people have been striving for for centuries. From Buddha to Plato, the desire for humankind to unify rather than be divisive has pervaded, despite the ongoing wars and genocides around the globe. However, 2024 saw a 0.56% drop in average country peacefulness, marking the fifth consecutive year that global peace has decreased. Over 95 million people have been displaced due to violent conflict, and peace inequality continues to grow.
3️⃣ How you can get involved: You can get involved with International Day of Peace by getting involved with United Nations (UN) activities, writing peace poetry, or going to a vigil:
- Attend a United Nations event: The United Nations has a number of International Day of Peace initiatives you can get involved in. Maybe the easiest one is the Moment of Silence, which is held at midday in any timezone.
- Write some peace poetry: Use your creative skills to create a peace poem. If writing isn’t your forté, how about making an art project, or writing a song that calls for peace?
- Go to a peace vigil: See if there are any peace day vigils in your area. Maybe join a peace protest, or write to your government representative to advocate for peace.

A Brief History of International Day of Peace
When was this event established: International Day of Peace was founded in 1981 by the United Nations. While initially held on the third Tuesday of September, this changed in 2001, when it happened to fall on the same day as the 9/11 attacks. It was then changed to September 21 and has been celebrated on this day ever since.
How has it developed since then: Each year the United Nations dedicates a specific theme to the event. Recently, themes have included: ‘Cultivating a Culture of Peace,’ ‘End Racism. Build Peace,’ and ‘Climate Action for Peace.’ It asks for the world to have a 24-hour ceasefire and is marked by a speech from the UN Secretary-General.
3 Interesting Facts About International Day of Peace
- Doves and Peace: Doves have been a symbol of peace since early Christianity, but in 1949, Pablo Picasso was commissioned to design an artwork for the World Peace Congress, and he painted the ‘Dove of Peace.’ This beautiful painting made the dove as a symbol of peace even more widespread.
- Most Peaceful Country in the World: Since 2008, Iceland has held the number one spot as the most peaceful country in the world. In the most recent Global Peace Index, Yemen was found to be the least peaceful country in the world.
- Less Peace Now: According to the Global Peace Index, the world has become less peaceful over the last 16 years, with the average country’s peacefulness score deteriorating by 4.5% since 2008.
