Hey fellow impactful ninja ?

You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.

  • Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.

  • But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.

Why do we add these product links?

First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.

And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.

What do these affiliate links mean for you?
  1. First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.

  3. And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we won’t receive any commission but we’ll still be happy to have helped you.

What do these affiliate links mean for us?
  1. When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).

  3. And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.

What does this mean for me personally?

You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.

Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.

Stay impactful,

Happy Wednesday 👋

Did you know that over the years, biodiversity has decreased so much that 95% of our food-energy needs are now met by only 30 crops?

And the less agricultural diversity we have, the more susceptible our food supply becomes to disease and drought. Eventually, our food supply could even be wiped out entirely…

But now for the good news!

In Norway, deep inside a mountain, we have a massive safety deposit box aimed at preventing that exact scenario from happening.

And after many years, their creators are finally getting some recognition.

Here are the impactful insights that I have for you today:

  • Global seed vault creators awarded World Food Prize 🌱
  • Developing a battery for low-income countries 🔋
  • Which European country has the most environmentally friendly economy 🌎
  • And more… 💚

🌱 Seed Vault Creators Awarded 2024 World Food Prize

1️⃣ The big picture: Cary Fowler and Geoffrey Hawtin, key figures in the creation of the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, have been awarded the 2024 World Food Prize for their efforts in preserving global crop diversity. The Svalbard Global Seed Vault, located on a Norwegian island in the Arctic Circle, now holds 1.25 million seed samples from nearly every country, safeguarding a wide variety of crops against threats like climate change, political instability, and natural disasters.

2️⃣ Why is this good news: The initiative began in 2004 and culminated in the vault’s opening in 2008. The vault helps to ensure that vital crop diversity is preserved and contributes to global food security. According to Fowler, the seed vault acts as an “insurance policy” for feeding the world in the coming decades.

3️⃣ What’s next: Fowler and Hawtin hope that their recognition will lead to increased funding for seed banks worldwide, highlighting the relatively low cost and high importance of these facilities in ensuring a stable food supply for the future. But for right now, this recognition underscores the importance of maintaining agricultural biodiversity in the face of increasing challenges posed by climate change, pests, diseases, and land degradation.

📢 More Good News…

🦬 How bison can enhance carbon sequestration:

  • A herd of 170 European bison were recently reintroduced to Romania’s Țarcu mountains, an initiative which could significantly aid in carbon sequestration.
  • Bison contribute to the carbon sequestration process by grazing evenly, recycling nutrients to fertilize the soil, dispersing seeds, and compacting the soil, which helps prevent stored carbon from being released.
  • Reintroducing bison and other large mammals presents a promising strategy for carbon sequestration and biodiversity conservation, offering a synergistic approach to addressing climate change and environmental degradation.

🔋 Developing a battery for low-income countries:

  • Researchers at Linköping University have developed a sustainable and cost-effective battery made from zinc and lignin, capable of enduring over 8000 charge cycles while retaining approximately 80% of its performance.
  • This battery technology holds significant potential for providing reliable electricity storage solutions, particularly in low-income countries where access to electricity is limited.
  • By combining cost-effectiveness, durability, and environmental friendliness, this innovation has the potential to provide a viable solution for energy storage in low-income countries, enhancing the reliability of solar power and contributing to global sustainability efforts.

🌎 Which European country has the most environmentally friendly economy:

  • Italy is currently leading the European Union in terms of having the most environmentally friendly economy, according to a report by the Circular Economy Network and ENEA. This report assessed various sustainability metrics across five major EU countries: Italy, France, Germany, Spain, and Poland.
  • Italy excels in urban waste management and recycling rates, with an urban waste recycling rate reaching 49.2% in 2022, close to the EU’s target of 50%.
  • Italy’s leadership in the circular economy highlights the effectiveness of integrating sustainable practices in waste management and material reuse. This achievement serves as a model for other EU nations striving to enhance their environmental sustainability.
