Hey fellow impactful ninja ?

You may have noticed that Impactful Ninja is all about providing helpful information to make a positive impact on the world and society. And that we love to link back to where we found all the information for each of our posts.

  • Most of these links are informational-based for you to check out their primary sources with one click.

  • But some of these links are so-called "affiliate links" to products that we recommend.

Why do we add these product links?

First and foremost, because we believe that they add value to you. For example, when we wrote a post about the environmental impact of long showers, we came across an EPA recommendation to use WaterSense showerheads. So we linked to where you can find them. Or, for many of our posts, we also link to our favorite books on that topic so that you can get a much more holistic overview than one single blog post could provide.

And when there is an affiliate program for these products, we sign up for it. For example, as Amazon Associates, we earn from qualifying purchases.

What do these affiliate links mean for you?
  1. First, and most importantly, we still only recommend products that we believe add value for you.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission - but at no additional costs to you.

  3. And when you buy something through a link that is not an affiliate link, we won’t receive any commission but we’ll still be happy to have helped you.

What do these affiliate links mean for us?
  1. When we find products that we believe add value to you and the seller has an affiliate program, we sign up for it.

  2. When you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we may earn a small commission (at no extra costs to you).

  3. And at this point in time, all money is reinvested in sharing the most helpful content with you. This includes all operating costs for running this site and the content creation itself.

What does this mean for me personally?

You may have noticed by the way Impactful Ninja is operated that money is not the driving factor behind it. It is a passion project of mine and I love to share helpful information with you to make a positive impact on the world and society. However, it's a project in that I invest a lot of time and also quite some money.

Eventually, my dream is to one day turn this passion project into my full-time job and provide even more helpful information. But that's still a long time to go.

Stay impactful,

Happy Wednesday 👋

Here are the impactful insights that I have for you today:

  • How to reduce food waste by connecting gardeners to pantries 🍎
  • How the EU is addressing microplastic pollution 🇪🇺
  • The drones that are helping fight deforestation 🌳
  • And more… 💚

Imagine you are a gardener and have ample harvest. What would you do with it?

One helpful way would be to give it to your local food pantry so that your neighbors in need could eat your freshly harvested produce.

But would you even know where the next local pantry is or when and how you could donate your produce?

I wouldn’t (ok, that might not be a stretch since I’m not a gardener, but I still never heard about this concept before).

Luckily, there’s one man who made it his mission to change that! So that fresh produce never has to go to waste anymore!

🍎 How to Enable Gardeners to Share Their Harvest With Local Pantries

Did you know that about 50% of US produce goes to waste while tens of millions of people suffer from food insecurity?

🎥 We’ve just launched a new podcast episode with Gary Oppenheimer from AmpleHarvest.org. Gary is a self-described aging geek who worked with computers and communications going back to the 1970s. As director of a community garden in 2009, he learned about the wasted food in many garden plots and created a local hands-on version of what would become AmpleHarvest.org to get the surplus harvests to local food pantries. He is also a long-distance cyclist, hiker, farmer, and dancer.

💚 AmpleHarvest.org is a nationwide nonprofit that is eliminating the waste of 11 billion pounds of fresh garden produce per year. They work predominantly with America’s 62 million backyard gardeners and its 32,500 neighborhood food pantries, which is significantly different from other programs in that food pantries are local and food banks are regional.

How to Enable Gardeners to Share Their Harvest: Gary Oppenheimer from AmpleHarvest.org (#19)

Here are three key points that you’ll learn from this episode:

✅ How connecting gardeners with local food pantries is key…

✅ How their unique approach helps reduce food waste and improve food security…

✅ How they were able to scale their impact while staying lean…

📢 More Good News…

🇪🇺 How the EU is addressing microplastic pollution:

  • The European Parliament’s Environment Committee has expanded the proposed rule addressing microplastic pollution to include maritime transport.
  • Approximately 180,000 tons of microplastic pollution is released into the environment every year, most of which occurs at sea.
  • The rule would establish penalties for noncompliance, increase accountability, and combat plastic pollution.

🌳 How drones are helping fight deforestation:

  • A pilot project in Austria’s Alps is using drones to protect areas of the forest vulnerable to deforestation by the bark beetle.
  • The drones are used to sow birch tree seeds in areas with steep terrain that are typically inaccessible to humans.
  • In addition to drones, trees are being planted by hand to reclaim entire mountainsides that have been destroyed by the bark beetle.

🚫 Why the US banned asbestos:

  • The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a final rule to ban the use of chrysotile asbestos, the only remaining form of asbestos used or imported to the US.
  • Exposure to asbestos is linked to 40,000 US deaths per year, and it can cause lung cancer, mesothelioma, ovarian cancer, and laryngeal cancer.
  • The ruling advances President Joe Biden’s Cancer Moonshot, an initiative seeking to end all cancer as we know it.
